Jet lag is a temporary sleep disorder that occurs when the body’s internal biological clock (circadian rhythm) is out of alignment with the time zone of a new location, typically following rapid travel across multiple time zones. The circadian rhythm regulates when we feel sleepy and alert, and it takes time to adjust to a significant shift in the local time cycle.
Symptoms of jet lag can include difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep at the appropriate local times, excessive daytime sleepiness, fatigue, difficulty concentrating, impaired memory, irritability, gastrointestinal disturbances, and a general feeling of malaise. The severity of symptoms depends on the number of time zones crossed, the direction of travel (eastward travel is generally more difficult to adjust to than westward travel), the individual’s age, and their personal sensitivity to circadian disruption.
Recovery from jet lag typically takes one to two days per time zone crossed, though individual variation is significant. Several strategies can help reduce its impact and speed adaptation to a new time zone. Before traveling, gradually adjusting sleep and wake times in the direction of the destination’s time zone can help. Seeking exposure to natural daylight upon arrival in the destination’s daytime hours helps reset the circadian clock. Avoiding alcohol and caffeine during and immediately after flights, staying well hydrated, and sleeping on the plane according to the destination’s night-time hours are also helpful.
Melatonin supplements, taken at the appropriate local bedtime in the new time zone, can support the circadian adjustment and reduce jet lag symptoms. Short-acting sleep aids may also be used on a temporary basis under medical guidance. With strategic management, the impact of jet lag can be significantly reduced.
