Sleep depth refers to how deeply a person sleeps during the night, and specifically to the extent to which sleep stages include the restorative deep sleep phase, also known as slow-wave sleep or N3 sleep. Sleep depth is an important aspect of overall sleep quality and has a significant impact on how rested and refreshed a person feels upon waking.
During a typical night, sleep alternates between light sleep, deep sleep, and REM sleep across several cycles. Deep sleep occurs primarily in the first half of the night and is characterized by slow, high-amplitude brain waves (delta waves), very slow heart rate and breathing, and minimal muscle activity. It is during deep sleep that the body carries out essential restorative functions, including tissue repair, muscle growth, immune system strengthening, and memory consolidation.
Factors that can reduce sleep depth include age (deep sleep naturally decreases with age), alcohol consumption (which suppresses deep sleep despite helping people fall asleep faster), caffeine, stress, irregular sleep schedules, and sleep disorders such as sleep apnea, which causes repeated awakenings that fragment sleep and prevent deep sleep from being sustained.
To promote deeper sleep, it is helpful to maintain a consistent sleep schedule, avoid alcohol and caffeine in the hours before bed, create a comfortable and quiet sleep environment, and engage in regular physical exercise. Vigorous exercise earlier in the day has been shown to increase the proportion of deep sleep.
