A weighted blanket is a type of heavy blanket filled with small weighted beads, pellets, or other materials that add evenly distributed weight across the body. Typically ranging from 2 to 12 kilograms, weighted blankets are designed to mimic the sensation of a gentle, firm hug — a technique known as deep pressure stimulation.
Deep pressure stimulation has been shown to activate the parasympathetic nervous system, reducing physiological arousal and promoting a sense of calm and security. This makes weighted blankets popular among individuals who struggle with anxiety, stress, or difficulty relaxing at bedtime. Research suggests that the use of a weighted blanket can reduce anxiety, lower heart rate and cortisol levels, and improve sleep quality.
Weighted blankets were originally developed for therapeutic use with children and adults with sensory processing difficulties, autism spectrum disorder, and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Their use has since expanded to the general population, and they are widely marketed as sleep aids and comfort products.
When choosing a weighted blanket, a common recommendation is to select a blanket that weighs approximately 10 percent of the user’s body weight, though individual preferences vary. The blanket should feel comfortably heavy without causing restriction or discomfort.
Weighted blankets are not recommended for young children under four years of age, or for individuals with certain health conditions such as respiratory problems, claustrophobia, or circulatory issues. Adults and older children who enjoy the sensation of being gently held or hugged often find weighted blankets to be a soothing and effective aid for relaxation and sleep.
