Sleep hygiene 101: small daily habits, big difference

Kvinde i sengen læser bog ved natlampe, afslappet smil og hyggelig aftenstemning

We all know the feeling — lying there tossing and turning while your mind keeps running, or waking up in the middle of the night and not being able to fall back asleep. But many people underestimate how much our daily routines and small choices have to do with how we sleep. In fact, a good night’s sleep starts hours before we put our head on the pillow.

Sleep hygiene is about the habits and surroundings that help your body and brain work together so you can naturally settle into rest. When you prioritise good sleep habits, you support your natural biological processes and make it easier for your body to switch from being awake to being deeply asleep.

Keep your evenings calm and dim

Light has a direct connection to the brain’s biological clock. When your eyes pick up bright light — especially the blue spectrum from screens and overhead lighting — your brain interprets it as daytime. That suppresses melatonin, the hormone that prepares us for sleep, and makes it harder to slide into the deepest sleep stages.

If you dim the lights instead — and maybe light a few candles or use smaller, warmer lamps — you help your body understand that the day is winding down. And if you’d like to keep watching TV or working on the computer in the evening without disrupting your internal clock, a pair of blue light glasses can shield your eyes from exactly the spectrum of light that would otherwise trick your brain into thinking the sun is still up.

Build small evening rituals

The body loves consistency. Small routines act as signposts for the nervous system, telling it that it’s nearly time to power down. That can be as simple as taking a warm bath, drinking a cup of herbal tea, or spending 10 minutes on light stretching.

For some people it helps to keep a notebook on the bedside table to jot down a few thoughts before bed — a way of “putting the day to rest”.

Small habits like these can feel almost trivial, but they help activate the parasympathetic nervous system, which is in charge of rest and digestion. That’s the opposite of fight-or-flight — and it’s absolutely necessary if you want to fall asleep.

Think about what — and when — you eat

Your digestion is closely linked to your sleep quality. Big, heavy meals right before bed keep the stomach working, which means the body is spending energy digesting rather than dropping into deep rest. That can lead to restless sleep or waking up in the middle of the night.

On the other hand, light snacks — particularly ones with magnesium — can actually help. Magnesium is a mineral that plays a role in relaxing the muscles and dampening nerve impulses, both of which support better sleep. A handful of almonds, a banana, or a small bowl of porridge can be a good gentle bedtime snack.

Make sure your bedroom invites calm

Even if everything else is in place, a cluttered, noisy or too-bright bedroom can sabotage your sleep. The body is biologically programmed to sleep in dark, cool, quiet surroundings — because in our distant past, those were the conditions that meant it was safe to relax.

Even small flashes of light — say from street lamps or electronics — can weaken your body’s melatonin signal. Here, a soft sleep mask can be a simple solution that creates total darkness around your eyes. If you sleep in an area with traffic, or share a bed with someone who snores, earplugs can be the difference between light, broken sleep and long, deep sleep cycles.

Try to keep the bedroom on the cool side too. When body temperature drops at night, you slip more easily into the deepest stage of sleep. The cooler your sleeping environment, the easier it is for your body to follow that natural rhythm.

The better you sleep, the more easily you’ll sleep through — and the better you’ll feel physically and mentally the next day.

When you give your body the right signals every evening — dim light, calming rituals, magnesium and a dark, quiet bedroom — you’re working with your biology rather than against it. The result, more often than not, is that you fall asleep faster, sleep longer without interruption, and wake up actually feeling rested.

Marcus

Elsker elsker elsker
